Over the past 5 years Rich Newsome, together with some of the best trial lawyers around the country, have worked together to develop ways to combine some of the various – and sometimes conflicting -- methods for picking juries. This work originally started with a Trial School Laboratory workshop where Newsome brought together Keith Mitnik, Alex Alvarez, Joey Lowe, John Carpenter, Brian McClain, John Zelbst and others to conduct a series of focus group mock voir dires to test various methods against each other. These methods include the “Tribe Building” method developed by Gerry Spence and the Trial Lawyers College, the "Cause is King" method developed by legendary jury consultant Jay Burke and refined by Keith Mitnick, the "Speed Voir Dire" developed by the late-great Tom Rhodes, the MOMUS method developed by Alex Alverez, and others. This and subsequent work resulted in the Mixed Method Advocacy – or MMA – hybrid method for voir dire that is powerful, comprehensive and game changing.

The MMA voir dire has since been tested in various trials across the country resulting in a string of record breaking verdicts. In this presentation Newsome will walk participants through the method, demonstrate the method using a voir dire from a product liability death case that resulted in a 26 million dollar verdict, and give participants practical takeaways that will unquestionably improve their approach to voir dire.
