I grew up in Maine, the son an elementary school teacher (mom) and law professor (dad). Most of my important life lessons, except how to argue, came from my mom. I’m a little embarrassed (but also a little proud) of the fact that I may be the first person in history to fail out of college and earn a JD from Yale Law School. Following law school, I clerked for a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and then worked in the litigation department of Latham & Watkins in NY City. In 2003, I returned to Maine to join a plaintiff firm. At first, I tried a lot of car crash and premises liability cases. Gradually, I evolved to handling higher value, more complex cases. In 2020, I started a new firm, Gideon Asen LLC, where we focus primarily on medical malpractice and other significant plaintiff cases. I love teaching and learning about trial law, and over the years, I have taught courses on deposition skills and trial practice at the University of Maine School of Law. I am the co-host of a popular trial lawyer podcast, elawvate.fm. In 2019, I was inducted into the Inner Circle of Advocates. I’ve always loved playing and coaching sports. In high school, I captained the ice-hockey team. Last year I served as the tennis coach for my son’s high school team. My wife, Sara, is a former two-term Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives and was the Democratic Nominee for U.S. Senate in 2020. I’m happiest outdoors and spend my free time hiking, canoeing, skiing and fishing.
